6/25/2022 Riverhead Raceway: NWMT Buzz Chew Chevy Cadillac 200
The morning started out a little hectic after I realized I had forgotten to charge our transponder the night before, but I got that all sorted out. Then on our way out to the track, we hit some major traffic, but we had just enough time to sign in and get ourselves set up before practice got started.
Today was very hot and humid but at least there was a breeze to keep the air moving. The major focus of the night was the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, which meant we were around some pretty big names, and it's always cool to be in the same pits as the guys you watch on TV.
As amazing as it was last week to race our way into the feature, we're testing out how our older tires feel. With the heat, and the older tires, I'm not going to be surprised if we end up slip-sliding around a bit. We'll see how practice goes and we have our newer tires with us if we need to swap them.
As expected the track was crazy slick, and it was a little all over the place in practice. We our older tires on we did get a little sideways, but kept it rolling. With the older tires, we were only a little bit slower than we had been running, so that's useful information for the notebook. We swapped tired back to our newer set, and lined up for round 2.
Round 2 was better. Aside from getting stuck behind a much slower car, we were way more stable and a little quicker with the newer tires. Now we wait as the Tour Mods get their hour long practice session.
Heat races were finally up and due to our lack of clear track in practice, we started 6th in the 4th heat. We weren't able to race our way in, so we had to race the consi. We started 8th and finished 6th along with running some 14.2 laps. Unfortunately we neither won the consi nor did we have enough points to be the provisional so our night ended there. Now we can just hang out and watch the features.
After the carnage that went on in the feature, I'm not as upset that we didn't make it. The field got stacked up on a restart, one car ended up flipping and a few cars got hooked together. Everyone walked away from all incidents, but if we were in the main event it's highly likely that we would have been caught up in the wreck. Small blessings I suppose, as we were able to head home with the car in one piece, which is a lot more than some can say.
