7/8/2023: Riverhead Raceway - Eagle Auto Mall 100 & Big Wheel Race
Ugh. I hate summer... well the summer weather anyways. Hot, muggy, sunny, the perfect storm to sap any energy I muster. BUT! I will push on because today is a Saturday and that means raceday! At least for today, since we're off next week and the week after. Ed and I are planning to head over to Wall Stadium in NJ to watch some racing on one of our off weeks, so y'all may see some clips from that in the vlogs coming up. We're getting better and better at loading up to head out to the track, since we packed up our trailer in like 15 minutes, before looking at each other and saying, 'wow, we still have some time before we have to leave...'

Once we hit the road, we went over our game plan for the day, after making some more pretty big changes to the car. Ed reached out to a Legends Car Facebook group to get some advice and opinions, and we made some adjustments in the wake of the new information. Upon getting to the track we got unloaded, and set up our pit before Ed had to attend a drivers meeting. Normally I'll go to them too, but with this heat and the option to not go, I stayed back to keep cool.
Practice went pretty well, and we tried a few things with tire pressures, but we've come to the conclusion that another adjustment needs to happen back in the shop. Ed was still able to run fast times of 14.0s in both round of practice though. We started on the pole in the first heat race with a pill draw of 2, and we managed to hold on for a 5th place finish, securing us a spot in the feature for a 3rd time this season. We got the car ready, then went and watched the consi before strapping in for the main event.
We started 21st after a number of cars dropped to the rear, before the feature began. We had a clean race overall, and even managed to pass a few cars after some hard racing, for a finish of 20th out of 26 cars total. Overall, we had a great night, had some good laughs with our racing family, and the car came back home in one piece.
Today's blog is brought to you by this giant hunk of rubber that beaned Ed in the helmet while racing:
