07/01/2023: Riverhead Raceway - Flying Dutchman 73rd Anniversary Tribute

With a gross hot morning to start off our Saturday, I can't wait until later this evening when it starts to cool down. The "nice" weather brought out all the assholes on the road as we head out to the track, but that's really only because the sun melts their last remaining brain cells, if they had any to begin with. During our off week, we made some pretty major changes to our setup so we're hoping we can get a few extra tenths out of the car. Assuming Ed can drive consistent laps of course, which we also did some off-track assessment of.

We got in to the pit area, unloaded and set up as we do, and then got ready to wait a bit until practice. There looks to be a good number of cars here today, including some we haven't seen in a while. That, on top of the heat is going to make for some interesting racing today.

39 cars hit the track for the first round of practice, which is the most we've had in some time. The track was slick and there was some crazy rubber laid down on the track, bit Ed managed a solid 14.178 lap. There where a couple of spins which broke up the rhythm, but onto round 2 to see what we can do. The 2nd round was definitely a more consistent round with Ed hitting a 14.0, and no cautions to break up the pace. For the heat races, we're scheduled to start 7th of 9 cars and they'll be taking the top 6 cars for the feature. Our heat is pretty stacked again so we may or may not be able to race our way in tonight.

We ended up finishing 8th in the heat race which landed us expectedly in the consi. We were scheduled to start 5th, but through some hoo-doo, voodoo shenanigans we started 3rd. Ed was able to quickly secure 2nd place for awhile until he got a little sideways and allowed 3rd place to catch him and then help him to get even more slideways. A few laps later he was able to gather the car back up and made his way back to 4th, where he finished. It was some excellent racing, but our night did end there. We headed out to watch the features and enjoy the fireworks both on and off the track.

This blog post is brought to you by this random bolt Ed found in his car after being pelted with rubber during practice. I mean, seriously?!?! We don't even use that type of hardware! The bolt in question:
