9/2/13: Riverhead Raceway - First Responders Night

A relaxing start to the long weekend, Ed was able to sleep in a bit before heading to the track, rather than his normal routine of working for a few hours before loading up and heading out. The weather is nice, good for racing if not a little on the warm side, but I've always preferred the colder weather; the perfect match for my frozen heart. After getting checked in, we set up our pit area as we do, and got ready for the first round of practice. 

In the first round of practice, Ed decided to follow Steve to see if he can help with figuring out the track a bit. The car felt good and in round 2 Ed plans to lead Steve to see if he can keep up.  Round 2 went well, with Ed hitting his normal stride before being stuck behind some slower cars. In a surprise twist, we're getting a 3rd round of practice today, so that's an extra few laps of track time.

There are only 26 cars here today, which means everyone makes the feature! With our draw of 64, we'll be starting 2nd in the 3rd heat. Funnily enough Steve will be starting 1st in that heat, while Rich (81) will be starting 3rd in the 1st heat. With who else is in our heat I fully expect to end up in the back third, which means starting towards the rear in the feature. We finished 6th in the heat race, and we'll be starting 21st in the feature, right where we expect to be.

With some cars dropping to the rear, we started 18th. I think. It started pretty quick and I didn't count the cars. We finished 19th after only a single caution and a pretty clean race over all. We managed to stay on the lead lap thanks to the conveniently timed yellow, and we're the last car on the lead lap by the end of the race.
