Double Length Post: 8/5/23 & 8/12/23: Riverhead Raceway

This Saturday morning started much the same as the last few weeks have, Ed going off to work in the morning and me waking up way before my alarm is set to go off, but the major difference is that IT'S RACE DAY! Finally! After 2 scheduled week off and 1 extra week off due to heat/weather, we're finally heading back out to the track. It's hot and sunny, but we're excited to head back out to Riverhead and test out some of our theories we've come up with during our extended break.

Once we got signed in, I picked up our winnings from last time we raced while Ed went to get his glamor shots done.... lmao, I mean his head shot for the new website Riverhead is working on. It was a little hectic once the pits opened, since we only have and hour before practice, instead of an hour and a half like we're used to. But at least I don't have to yell at Ed to get dressed today since he needed his firesuit for the photo.

After our 2 rounds of practice, one with our scuffs and one with stickers, we've come to the conclusion that the track is slick and slower than it could be. From my view Ed looked pretty stable on the track and looking at the laptimes, everyone is slower than normal at least for now.

After a brief drivers meeting, we got ready to head out to the track for our heat race, where we're scheduled to start shotgun on the field in 8th, in the 4th heat. We finished where we started, and with everyone in that heat that was completely expected. We started 3rd in the consi, and Ed was holding tough after a few cars spun. We finished in 5th after almost spinning ourselves, but kept it going in the right direction. Our night ended there, but overall not a bad raceday after an extend break from the track.

Because I'm terrible at staying on a schedule with extended unplanned breaks, this post is going to be a two week coverage.  This morning was hot and mildly humid, but a nice cloud cover came in as we were driving out to the track. We got to the track with no issue, but when we were signing in, it started raining a bit. Hopefully the brief showers before we got into the pits was everything, and we can get through today dry.

In the first practice, Ed looked pretty solid until the very last lap where he missed his mark and almost looped it. Luckily he gathered it back up and kept it straight. A minor adjustment back in the pits and we are ready for round 2. The second round was shorter but faster for Ed, hitting our time wall of 14.0s laps, but only getting 4 laps.

With only 26 cars at the track tonight, everyone makes the feature, and we only have 3 heat races. We're scheduled to start 7th in the second heat, so hopefully we can earn some positive passing points tonight. We actually started 6th after a car dropped to the rear but finished 7th after Ed started overdriving the car when he got close to the car in front of him. He hit a couple of 14.00sec laps before he choked but alls well that ends well and we look towards the feature.

We lasted 15 laps out of the 20 lap feature, when there was a nasty wreck. Everyone was okay, and we avoided it, but Ed ended up pulling into the pits shortly after due to a really bad vibration. Luckily he did that as we found out the drive shaft coupler to the engine was loose and slowly backing out. The car survived and everything is completely fixable, so we go on to race another day.
