6/3/2023: Riverhead Raceway - School Bus Oval

An overcast cool morning, the absolute perfect racing weather, and only a minor threat of some showers was how our race day started off. After making some significant chassis adjustments during the week, Ed and I are excited to get back to the track to test out the changes. Our goal, as always, is to run as many laps as we can, and, with the hope of a heat that's not so stacked, try to make the feature. Also, one of the perks of an open trailer is the appreciative honks and thumbs up from other drivers while we're heading to the track.

With a pill draw of 28, I'm going to assume we will be in the 1st heat, and with the information that "they added sticky stuff to the top", practice will be interesting for sure. The first round was a little congested, so we didn't really get a good sense of how fast the car is this week, but Ed did notice some extra grip towards the top.  Round 2 was better, with Ed hitting a 14.10, but a couple of spinners broke the rhythm and we weren't able to have a longer run. We'll be starting 2nd in the 3rd heat (so I didn't put us on the pole again, yay!), and with the other cars in our heat we have a fairly decent chance of staying in the top 6 and racing our way into the feature. With 31 cars here today, there will be 4 heats (8 cars in the first 3 and 7 in the 4th) and the top 6 from each transfer to the A-Main (feature).

WE DID IT!!! We made our first feature of the year! We finished 5th in our heat after some exciting racing (bottom of 3 wide... Ed) and finally, FINALLY, raced our way into a feature race! And we hit some pretty fast times too. We'll be starting 23rd out of 26 cars, and the only goal is to bring the car home in one piece.

We survived our first feature of the year! With a finish of 20th, 3 spots better than we started, Ed put on a hell of a race. By the last 5 laps he was very loose, but I chalk that up to us not having run 20 consecutive laps before, this year. With a handful of cautions, which we were thankfully not a part of, we got some good practice at restarts, which Ed definitely found useful. There was a good back and forth battle with Kim (#82) for quite a few laps too. With the feature race for the Legends having been first on the agenda, we're done for the night, and can now just sit back and enjoy the rest of the racing.
