5/27/2023: Riverhead Raceway - Advance Auto Parts Night & Miller Lite Triple Crown

It's the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, and we're back heading to the track as we do most weekends. It's sunny, bright, hot... a good day for racing overall, not so much for us of the fairer skined variety to be outside all day, but I digress. Major goal for today is to run more than 14 laps, and still bring the car home in one piece.

We got to the track, got signed in, I drew the number 42 in the pill draw while Ed started to unload in our pit stall. That is of course after he woke up from his cat nap when we were waiting for the pit gates to open. There seems to be a good number of cars here today, so we'll see how the heats stack up, and hopefully we can make the feature today.

The practices went well, with Ed able to keep up nicely with one of the cars that's consistently faster than us in the first round. The second round was a bit less helpful, as we were stuck behind a rolling roadblock for most of it. With 4 heats of 8 cars each, and us scheduled to start 2nd in the 2nd heat, hopefully we can stay in the top 6 and race our way into the feature. At the very least, I'm just hoping we don't get run over.

Well, we didn't get run over, but we were stuck on the outside where there is absolutely zero grip. Ed fell back to 7th quickly, and eventually ended up in last after a great race with the #82 of Kim, but we definitely think it's a setup issue that we just haven't dialed in yet. Out of 8 cars in the consi, we're starting 8th, so hopefully we can get some experience passing.

We ended up starting 6th since 1 car didn't make the race and the provisional dropped to the rear. After an eventful race we managed a solid 3rd place. There was some "minor" contact with the 81(sorry Rich), but he spun out on his own, and we only caught him when he was sideways in front of us. No hurt feelings and we all had a good laugh about the racing incident after making sure everyone was okay. Unfortunately that ended our night, but we ran some pretty consistently fast laps despite the once again fairly stacked heat.
