5/13/2023: Riverhead Raceway - Scout Night

Well today started out okay, got everything loaded up and got ready to head out, but we barely made it 5 minutes from the house when we noticed one of our trailer tires wobbling. Turns out the wheel bearing was shot. One emergency trip to the auto parts store later, and Ed was able to throw it back together and we were finally able to get on the road. The weather is supposed to be hot, mildly humid, but overcast so pretty good day for racing over all.

We made it to the track with literally minutes to spare before we had to line up for practice. Right as Ed was about to climb in to the car, the rear view mirror cracked and fell right into his lap, so practice round 1 was done without any mirrors. He still managed a decent lap time and a nice pass on another car.

Practice 2 went pretty well too, now that Ed had his mirror back. He ran his fastest lap of the season so far, even while having a car that was a little loose. After making a few adjustments, we checked the heat line up and got ready to wait for qualifying.

Once again we're in a stacked heat, but not on the pole this time. We'll be starting 7th out of 9 cars in the first heat, but we're unsure if we are actually using the new handicapping system or not. Either I'm pretty sure we'll end up in the consi again, but who knows.

We finished 8th, which is what I fully expected based on who was in our heat. Unfortunately we are in the consi, since it was confirmed they are taking the top 6 cars from each heat, but with how today started I'm glad we're racing at all. Ed ran several of his fastest laps of the season yet and was doing a good job of staying with the rest of the field until one small bobble cost him some time.

Ed is slated to start 6th in the consi out of 9 cars, but we'll see who actually makes the call and makes it out to the track. We ended up finishing 5th in the consi, too far back to make the feature, but Ed got some good hard racing in for a few laps with the #17 of Ben Morabito.  Our night ended there but like we do, we stuck around to watch the features and support our at-track family.
