6/18/2022 Riverhead Raceway: Big Wheel Race & Demo Derby
The weather started out real nice for a raceway, if a little windy. We unloaded at the track, ready to show off our updated paint scheme and our current objective is to race our way into the feature without needing to race the consi. Whether this happened today or in a few weeks, that's the next step for our racing journey.
Today's festivities included the kid's Big Wheel Race and a Demolition Derby to end the night. Our buddy Kevin(#51) was back this week so, of course, there will be a bit of a friendly rivalry between both our drivers. With over 30 legends cars out here it was sure to be an exciting race day.
Our first practice went alright. It wasn't our fastest laps, but we did get stuck behind another car, and Ed hasn't quite figured out the whole passing other cars thing yet. Especially when it's another relatively new driver who hasn't figured out his ideal line yet.
Practice 1:
Second practice was pretty good. While we didn't run our fastest laps ever, but we ran a 14.2 second lap, not once, not twice, but three times in one session. By far the most consistent fast laps we've had yet. The 30 second lap was because a car had spun on the track and we needed to avoid the surprise roadblock.
Practice 2:
The heat race lineups were posted shortly after practice ended and we started 6th in heat #2 with Kevin starting 7th in the same heat. There were 4 total heats and the top 6 cars from each heat made the feature.
There was a drivers meeting after all the practice was done, and then qualifying started with time trials for the Crate Modifieds and Late Models, then it was our turn. After an incident on lap 1 where the front row took each other out, we finished in 3rd place in our heat, and made the feature! Our buddy Kevin, also made it into the feature, finishing the heat in 6th, 1 lap down. I must be some sort of witch, because I write these throughout the day...
For the feature, we started 15th, and Kevin started 22nd out of 26 total cars in the feature. After a few on track incidents, we finished in 22nd place and Kevin was able to get around us for a 20th place finish. With the amount of carnage tonight we're both lucky that our cars are going home in one piece.
Unfortunately for the other divisions, some rain rolled in and cut the night short, but at least we got our feature in, and are heading home intact, albeit a little damp.
