Riverhead Raceway Open Practice #2, Opening Night, and More!
Wow, so I've been a little pre-occupied and haven't been able to publish any updates. So, strap in, tighten your belts and prepare for a few weeks of updates!
Practice #2:
So to start off, we had some improvement in out overall lap times between the two weeks of practice, which is always a plus. Nothing major to report, and everything came home in one piece, while still pushing the edge of control and improving on the track.
Opening Night:
Originally opening night was supposed to be on May 7th, but due to weather, it was pushed back to May 14th, which also happened to be the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour night, so all the big boys were there. We made it through all the rounds of practice before Mother Nature decided that she wanted to throw in her two-cents and it started raining, hard. Qualifying for all divisions was rained out, so Feature Event participants were based on lap times from the two practice sessions. For the INEX Legends division specifically, they dropped the slowest 4 cars, based on the total number of cars that were there to race. We made it into the feature!
Luckily after a several hour long rain delay, the weather cleared up enough for the officials to send out the fancy Air Titan track dryer and start the long process of getting the track race-ready. With the schedule of events shuffled around a bit, we finally fired our engines and got cars back onto the track. The INEX Legends were last up on the schedule, but at least we got to race at all. Between a number of cautions and some more weather rolling in, our feature event was shortened from 20 laps to only 13 laps. During that race, we managed to stay on the lead lap, and pulled out an 18th place finish out of 26 cars and most importantly came back home in one piece.
Week 2:
The most recent race day was fun, exciting, and hot. At a sweltering 80F, and humid to boot, we all did our best to stay hydrated as we went through our two rounds of practice, with our newest sponsor, Duro Dyne on board.
Practice 1 went fine, but in the 2nd round we spun and burnt out our starter. Luckily we were able to push start our car and keep going the rest of the night. We were in the very first heat race and we finished 7th when only the top six move on to the main event.
Riverhead Raceway's website had also finally been updated to show the current point standings, and at the time of posting this, we're 20th in the standings! Not to shabby for our first full season!
